Merit

Upper Iowa University uses Merit pages to publicize student achievements inside and outside of the classroom. Students will receive recognition when they make the dean’s list, present their research at a conference, participate in volunteer activities, study abroad, and much more. Students will receive credit for their achievements and activities, while also creating an online profile – a Merit page – that they can use for jobs, internships, and references after graduation. In addition, students can share items with their friends and family through Facebook and Twitter.

How does it work?

Campus departments, clubs and organizations provide the Director of Editorial Services in the Office of Communications & Marketing with a brief article about the achievements or recognition, along with the name and/or a spreadsheet of students who earned the accomplishment. Communications will create a personalized story about these students and their accomplishments and award a badge, which will publish on the student’s profile on Merit. Stories will also be sent to each student’s hometown newspaper for publication. Students and their parents may email [email protected] with questions and concerns.

What is a badge?

A badge appears on the student’s page for their recognition. For instance, a student who is named to the dean’s list for four semesters will receive a badge on their page each time they receive the honor.

How is Merit important for students?

Merit helps people who make decisions about internships, grad schools and jobs, find the good stuff about students. The site showcases student accomplishments with official college badges that show they’re authentic.

A Merit page creates a positive online identity for post-graduation success. Many companies research applicants online, and some have rejected applicants based on what they found there. A student’s Merit page is a way for them to shine online.

Students who are featured are notified of the announcement through their Peacocks email address and encouraged to share their accomplishments with family and friends through social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. Parents also receive an email allowing them to share their student achievements with their own social media channels.

How does Merit enhance the Upper Iowa experience?

Merit pages show how Upper Iowa University prepares students for a career, and makes them valuable members of society and more attractive to employers. The profiles connect what students do in the classroom to the exceptional career-building opportunities students gain while on campus.

How do you claim your page?

1. Go to http://uiu.meritpages.com/ and search for your name.
2. Next to your name, find the option to claim your profile.
3. Enter your UIU Peacocks email address and submit the form. Merit will send you a confirmation email.
4. Claim your Merit page by clicking on the “connect with Facebook” button in the email you receive.
5. Follow the Facebook prompts for logging in and connecting to your Facebook account. By doing this, you’ve claimed your Merit page.

How do students opt out?

To opt out of the program, simply reply to the email you receive from Merit and ask to be removed. Or, email your request to [email protected]. You will be given instructions on how to opt out of future stories.
